Lá Fhéile Bríde

Making St. Brigid's Crosses

Our Project polished and complete!

We had a viewing day in our classroom last Friday for all our school and locality to come and see our work. We were able to share our knowledge of the West Cork Railway with everyone and show them how much history there really is in our locality.

Cork School Heritage History Projects

Our class are making a project on the West Cork Railway. Our locality is immersed in lots of history on the West Cork Railway. We even had our very own Railway Station, Waterfall Railway Station. We were very lucky to get to see the Station as it stands today, very different from when it was in use between 1851 and 1961. Mr.and Mrs Kent bought the property after it was closed and they very kindly took us on a tour. See some of the images we captured on our day out (6th December 2013).
A very interesting fact is that the railway opened on the 6th December 1851 and we visited the station exactly 162 years later!

Where the Waterfall Sign used to be

Mr.Kent showing us some of the tracks. This piece is called a flange.

An original wall still standing. They used to be the toilets at the station

Mr. Kent showing us a spike. This was used to secured the tracks in place. Mr. Kent kindly gave us some spikes for our school artefacts museum!
